Meat Buying
Is meat good for you?
I was very fortunate to have Leslie Beck, friend and nutrition expert with me as I stocked up on groceries for the week ahead. After helping me select vegetables as well as bread, we moved on to the meat section.

I addressed the issue of red meat and whether or not it can be healthy. Leslie gave me the scoop on this very common concern. She explained that people have tended to shy away from red meat because they are afraid it is very high in fat when, in fact, most cuts of beef are very lean. We actually get only about 81/2 % of our total fat intake from fresh meat.

Not a big contributor to fat, red meat is also a really good source of iron. However, Leslie does advise that the key to remember is choosing smaller portions, using a variety of different protein foods in your diet. For example, if you're craving a BLT, why not try chicken bacon instead of pork? There are many different varieties of protein today which can help you to cut fat intake but still provide you with essential nutrients.
